Roger Jones

Roger C. Jones, 67, of Sumner, died Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from complications following surgery.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. Jim Brokman officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church on Monday, December 17, and for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday. A scripture service will also be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday at the church. The family suggests that memorial donations be made in his name to SEMS. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting Roger’s family. His remains have been cremated.

Roger C. Jones, son of Clarence and Mathilda Bouska Jones, was born March 26, 1945, at Sumner, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. He received his education in the Sumner schools, graduating from Sumner High School in 1963. On July 20, 1968, he was united in marriage with Sharon Krueger at Immaculate Conception Church in Sumner. He retired after thirty years at Deere & Co. in 1994, and purchased Thunder Lanes in Sumner in 1997. He also worked for many years at E&M Lumber Co. in Sumner and did garden tilling and snow removal for area residents and businesses. He was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered at SEMS and was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, but he most enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities. He loved running the bowling alley, making his "famous burgers", bowling, and going to bowling tournaments.

In addition to his wife, Sharon of Sumner, he is survived by one son, Brad Jones of Sumner; one daughter, Lori (Erik) Smith of Cannon Falls, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Bailey Jones of Monroe, Iowa, Kimberly (Colby) Hoff of Mt. Vernon, South Dakota; Nicole (Peter) Otto of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Bracken Smith of Cannon Falls, Minnesota; three great grandchildren, Alyson and James Otto, and Olivia Hoff; two brothers, Leo (Linda) Jones of Hawkeye and Robert (Shirley) Jones of Des Moines; four sisters, Mary Anderson of Fertile, Iowa, Lee Strempke of Westgate, Rachel Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri, and Dorothy Baker of Rockaway Beach, Missouri; and several nieces; nephews; great nieces; and great nephews.

Roger was preceded in death by his father and mother; his step father, Joe Volker; and two brothers, Ralph and Kenneth.

Grandpa i already miss you more then you know, A day will never go by on thinking on how much you meant to me and did for me, i will also never forget the time we would drive the tractor and u taking me out to the bowling alley to bowl and help you out there.
